CineDOC Summerschool Gori-Georgia

I graduated as a photographer and video artist from the Willem de Kooning Art Academy in Rotterdam, and obtained my Master in directing and scriptwriting at the
National Film & Television School in the UK. After, I received a Nipkow Fellowship to work in Berlin. I attended EAVE and the Binger Filmlab in Amsterdam, and participated in the Story Editing workshop by Franz Rodenkirchen and the Sources 2 Workshop for script editors. I live and work between The Netherlands and Georgia.

Script & production coaching

In addition to my own professional practice as a writer/director I coach young filmmakers in the development phase of their projects. Currently I am project coach on Holy Electricity, the first feature of Georgian filmmaker Tato Kotetishvili (HBF, BoostNL and Cinemart 2021). As a project coach I support writer, director and producer in the development of theior project, and to prepare the dossier to be sent out to international co-producers.
For Georgian producer Nushi Film I am script coach on Bees Buzz, the first feature of visual artist Vajiko Chikhiani and Vika, the third feature film of director Tamar Shavgulidze (Comets, 2019).
In 2021 I was year-mentor to Dutch/Moroccan filmmaker Aiman Hassani in the framework of the Dutch Directors Guild Mentoring Scheme, creating the possibility for Aiman to discuss much broader topics than just one project.

Consultancy & workshops

As a consultant I read and assessed numerous international scripts, filmplans, directors visions and artists concepts for funds, festivals and individuals. I was involved in Mediafonds, Dutch Film Fund, Flemish Audiovisual Fund, Creative Europe, and the Hubert Bals Fund.

For 4 years I was teaching audio-visuals at the Liberal Arts faculty at ArtEZ in Arnhem. I conducted a series of annual documentary- and writing workshops as part of the curriculum at the Masters' for Photographers and Designers in Breda, I was Head of Studies at the first edition of the CineDOC Summerschool in Georgia, gave an IDFA-Masterclass on the signature of the filmmaker, and last year a Lecture on hybrid filmmaking at the Amsterdam Film Academy.

Studio recording for The Nation, adapted & directed by Jeroen Stout

Here I also want to introduce my partner Jeroen Stout, who is an experienced scriptwriter, radiomaker and sound artist. Jeroen has been teaching young radio makers and writers, and, given his background as a researcher and film journalist, has been advising for several funds.

Approach

Our profession (or vocation, if you like) has become diverse and is evolving all the time; numerous ways of storytelling appear over a myriad of different platforms. It urges us to venture beyond borders, free from constraining conventions. Visual storytelling is key to translate ideas into fiction films, creative documentaries and everything in between and beyond. In this hybrid landscape I find the individual voice of the filmmaker crucial, so my approach will always be tailor-made to each individual project or workshop.

Working in a personal way you often enter new, unknown territory. That is exiting, but also uncertain. How to start your research? How to assess your material and formulate the direction to take? Sometimes you lack the overview, the courage or insight to make clear choices. Why and when do you leave the path you thought was the one to follow? Do you need to adjust or abandon, or stick with your initial plan? What are the consequences of your choices? And how to proceed?

This is where I can support you by discussing the process, share insights and offer other ways to further develop your project. This doesn't exclude critical questioning; sometimes it is necessary to create clarity in a work process, but I will never tell you what to do; after all, that is for you, the creator, to decide.
